CalConnect Technical Committees: TC Mobile
1. What is different about mobile calendaring?
Capabilities
Less memory & processing power
Limited battery life
Small screen size
Lower resolutions
Input methods
Usage
Device is mobile
User pays for data
Calendar usage may be interrupted
Challenges
Software distribution
Proprietary platforms
Open standards adoption
Connectivity
Bandwidth/Latency
Intermittent Connectivity
2. Charter
The goal of the Mobile technical committee is to identify the issues associated with mobile calendaring & scheduling and propose recommendations on how to address any problem areas.
This TC will provide the Consortium with information on the current state of mobile calendaring & scheduling and gather requirements and use cases specific to mobile environments.
The TC will promote adoption of open calendaring standards for mobile devices (e.g. iCalendar and CalDAV) and create best practice documents as needed to assist implementation of these standards.
To achieve these goals, the TC intends to work in concert with organisations and vendors in the mobile industry.
4. Mobile Calendaring Questionnaire
Two questionnaires were conducted in 2006 to understand:
What feature sets were currently supported
What features users wanted
EXAMPLE
What would you like to be able to do with your device that you cannot do right now?
“Sync reliably”
“Power on quickly :-)”
“SyncML! Synchronize the calendar”
“Use the calendar better, and sync it with PC apps…”
“Handle events in different time zones”
5. The Benefits of iCalendar paper
iCalendar is the standard for interoperable exchange of calendaring information
It is widely used and is being actively developed
However, it has limited adoption within the mobile industry
TC Mobile produced a white paper to promote wider adoption of iCalendar on mobile devices. It covers
The differences between vCalendar and iCalendar
The benefits of using iCalendar
Current efforts to improve interoperability
6. Mobile Calendar IOP Test Suite

7. Future Plans
CalDAVfor mobile devices white paper
It will describe technical requirements, recommendations and future mobile-specific possibilities
We hope this will help explain the relevance of CalDAVto mobile devices
More interoperability testing
Regular face to face events and virtual testing
Mobile Calendaring workshop
CalConnect is considering a mobile event in 2009
